Plains Spadefoot (Spea bombifrons)
Description: 1½ - 2 inches. Plains Spadefoots are the only frog or toad in Iowa to have vertical, cat-like pupils. They are generally grayish or brownish in appearance, with darker markings throughout the body. The skin is mostly smooth and moist.
Similar Species: American Toads, Fowler's Toads, and Woodhouse's Toads all have a similar body shape, but have dry warty skin, and round pupils.
